Onion Juice & Curl Harmony – Week 3

This is my third week using the onion juice treatment and also reviewing the Curl Harmony products.

This week i pretty much did the same thing with the onion juice as i did last week: onion juice, bentonite clay and ACV to balance the pH. This time i also added in some essential oils of Rosemary, Tea-Tree and Eucalyptus. This really made a difference with the smell of the treatment. It helped a lot. You could still smell the onion but the essential oils did mask some of the smell and also added in their own benefits. My scalp was extra tingly and also cool at the same time. It was great. I applied it to my scalp and focused especially on my nape area. I left it on for about 45 mins before washing my hair.

Last night i saturated my hair with olive oil in preparation for shampooing, and sectioned it into four large twists. Put a plastic bag on and tied a headscarf over it ready for bed.

Once i was ready to wash my hair i jumped in the shower and rinsed the twists thoroughly before taking down a twist, rinsing that more until all the bentonite had rinsed off. I then took a few pumps of the Creamy Shampoo and smoothed that in gently until it was nice and foamy. I then scrubbed my scalp, using the balls of my fingers. I squeezed off the excess and rubbed in a dab of the Hydrating Conditioner before rinsing out. I then added more hydrating conditioner to the section and detangled carefully with a wide tooth comb followed by my modified Denman brush. I then twisted the section, still with the conditioner in and clipped it up before moving on to the next. Once i had shampooed and detangled all sections i then rinsed out the remaining conditioner with the twists in and towel dried.

The DC was the same as i did last week with, the Intensive Repair Deep Conditioner with added honey and olive oil. I applied it in sections and covered my hair with a plastic bag for about 30 mins. I rinsed out, towel dried, added in some leave-in conditioner and Shea Butter mix before slicking it back in a ponytail and twisting the tail into three twists, pinning it up. I was going to a barbeque so i couldn’t have my usual unsightly large braids that my husband so detests. lol. I had to cover my hair with a black headscarf to look presentable which was fine.

Next week will be my last week with the onion juice treatment and the curl harmony review. I’ll let you know my overall rating/opinion of both then.

Take Care.

Onion Juice and Curl Harmony – Week 1

This week i began my onion juice treatments along with my attempts at using the Curl Harmony products.

I’ll start with the onion juice treatment first.

Onion Juice Treatment

I used a medium sized onion, like that pictured above and juiced it with my Champion Juicer. I got a decent amount of juice out of it. I was quite surprised. Then i had to really think about how i was going to apply it. I know the instructions say apply it neat before washing or mix juice with conditioner and then rinse but none of these would do for me (you must know by now that i don’t follow straight instructions, lol). Applying it neat was too fiddly for me and very wasteful, i thought. I want to get it ALL on my scalp. Not some in my hair, on my shoulders and on the floor. The second method was no good to me either as onion’s don’t exactly smell great and applying it at the last stage and only rinsing it off to finish would leave a really unpleasant oniony scent in my hair. Not good. I wanted to do it as a pre-poo treatment and then follow on by shampooing and conditioning. That way i get the two washes to rid the smell.

Ah, I have it. I decided to add a small amount of bentonite clay to the onion juice to make it pasty enough to apply it directly to the scalp. Good idea no?

I took half a teaspoon at a time and whisked it into the onion juice until it was a thick enough paste to scoop up with my finger. I used two teaspoons in all. Next time i will take some pictures to post.

I applied it to my scalp in sections, re-twisting each section as i went, then tied a plastic bag around my head. I had oiled my hair thoroughly the night before, like i normally do before i shampoo. I had the intention of leaving it on for 30 mins but ended up leaving it on for more like nearly an hour, Oops. No harm done. My scalp wasn’t irritated or anything and the bentonite clay had a nice cooling effect on my scalp. I did notice though that my head emitted a lot of heat. The plastic bag was very hot when i touched it. I think that’s a good thing. It shows a lot of blood circulating around that area so it seemed to have been working.

I then proceeded to wash my hair

Curl Harmony Review

I went a section at a time. I started by taking down the twist and rinsing it thoroughly to remove all the bentonite clay and onion juice. I then took a few pumps of the Creamy Shampoo and rubbed that through my hair. The shampoo itself is VERY WATERY. I lost a bit at first as it took me by surprise. I expected it to be slightly thicker (it does say ‘creamy’ on the bottle) and so it ran through my fingers. Once i rubbed it in my hair it lathered pretty well which again surprised me because of the consistency of it. The smell is very subtle. It smells like… shampoo. What else can i say. lol. I scrubbed my scalp using the balls of fingers whilst holding onto the ends of my hair with my other hand so as not to tangle the hair whilst washing. I squeezed off the excess and applied a tiny dab of the Hydrating Conditioner and rubbed that through before rinsing.

My coils felt really soft once i rinsed. It was unusually bouncy (strange isn’t it?). Hmmm, so far so good. I applied a dab more of the hydrating conditioner to the section and retwisted it before moving on to the next and repeating the process. I would normally detangle here but as i wanted conserve the Hydrating Conditioner i omitted this step and detangled after DC’ing instead. I’ll review the Hydrating Conditioner in greater detail on Wednesday when i use it to co-wash.

Once i had washed and twisted all the sections i did one last all-over rinse to remove the rest of the conditioner from my hair, towel dried and then deep conditioned.

Using a teaspoon i scooped out two heaped scoops (economy is key here ya know!) of the Intensive Repair Deep Conditioner into a bowl along with a few squirts of honey and some olive oil. The consistency of the conditioner is SUPER THICK. It reminds me of the Jason’s Aloe Conditioner. Even when mixed in with the honey and oil it maintained a beautifully thick and creamy consistency. It has a pleasant smell which is not strong at all and it doesn’t really linger much once rinsed out which is a shame, i like nice smelling conditioners.

I applied the DC to my hair one section at a time, untwisting, applying, re-twisting and then covered my hair with a plastic bag (Tesco to be precise, lol). I left it on for about 45 mins and then jumped back in the shower to detangle. The conditioner is really thick and as a result would not be great as is for detangling so what i did was undo the twist, wet my hand and scrunch the water through the section to dilute the DC a bit and make it detangler friendly. This definitely did the trick. It was quite easy to detangle my hair which i am super pleased about. I detangled using a wide tooth comb first followed on by the Denman brush to remove the shed hair. Once detangled, i twisted the section again, still with the conditioner in. Repeated that for all the sections, then I finally rinsed it out without taking the twists down under cool running water.

I towel dried, added leave-in conditioner and my Shea butter mix to my hair and scalp and cornrowed my hair into 4 large cornrows to air-dry.

I noticed that my hair was really soft but without feeling coated or filmy. I think all this time i’ve been mistaking coated hair with conditioned hair and maybe that’s why i haven’t been satisfied with other cone-free conditioners. Even so this DC left my hair touchebly soft and ‘cottony’ (in a good way).

I really like the products so far (minus the consistency of the shampoo, but i can live with it). I will have to use it for the rest of the month to make sure it really does my hair well but it’s a great start.

Curl Harmony Month

I previously posted about a brand i found on the net for curly hair care. I bought several of their products and as a result am going to try it out this month. So out of the window goes my usual regime and in comes my Curl Harmony regime.

Here is my proposed regime

Week 1
Weekend wash – Creamy Shampoo, Intensive Mask (DC – with oil and honey)
Mid-week Co-wash – Hydrating Conditioner

Week 2
Weekend Wash – Cleansing Conditioner, Hydrating Conditioner?
Mid-week Co-wash – Hydrating Conditioner

Week 3
Weekend wash – Creamy Shampoo, Intensive Mask (DC – with oil and honey)
Mid-week Co-wash – Hydrating Conditioner

Week 4
Weekend Wash – Cleansing Conditioner, Hydrating Conditioner?
Mid-week Co-wash – Hydrating Conditioner

Notes

  • I might not need to use the Hydrating Conditioner after the Cleansing Conditioner if that is conditioning and detangling enough. If i find it’s not, then i’ll apply a little of the hydrating conditioner on after.
  • It does seem as though i’ll be using the Hydrating Conditioner a lot so maybe a small 250ml bottle will not do, but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • To conserve conditioner i thought that i’ll leave out detangling in between shampooing and DC’ing and detangle after i’ve DC’d using the conditioner already on my head. That way i’ll use up less of the Hydrating Conditioner.

I will also be doing the onion juice treatment on a weekly basis before cleansing my hair so this will be my pre-poo treatment for the month.

so, on that note – HERE WE GO…..

Cayenne Pepper Treatment – Week 4

This week is my last week doing the Cayenne Pepper Treatment. I’ve enjoyed doing it. The mess, the tingling, the getting it in my eyes and having to wash it out. lol. It was great.

I just repeated what i did last week as this was the 5th Sunday in the month. I rinsed, double shampooed added conditioner over the shampoo and rinsed. Then i detangled and rinsed that off. I DC’d in the usual manner with the Ikove conditioner i mentioned in the previous posts. Left that on for about 30 mins and rinsed in cool water. Leave-in conditioner, Whipped hair butter mix and 4 cornrows to air-dry.

I wanted to talk about a few of the products i used today as they were kind of the only downside to an otherwise great hair run.

I’ve been trying to run away from ‘cones’ in my regime for a while now and it has sent me on a crazy product chase which has led me overtime to wander down to boots to see what was available. I browsed the isles to find a suitable co-wash and detangling conditioner and had read somewhere about this product – Original Source White Source and Avocado Conditioner for £1.99. I was quite exited to try it out and used it today as my detangling conditioner and for the conditioner over shampoo. I was so far from impressed it wasn’t even funny. It took me AGES to detangle because this has no slip whatsoever. Once i rinsed this out my hair felt like it had been shampooed, not conditioned. It was not good. The only thing it was good for was the conditioner over shampoo for the not so stripped feeling. But that’s hardly worth trumpeting. Any conditioner can do that job. I’m going to throw it away. It’s that rubbish and i’m gaining some serious clutter with all the different products i’ve been trying.

Another thing i wanted to mention was the Ikove conditioner i’ve been using for the past four weeks is not cutting it for me anymore. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still the best ‘no-cone’ deep conditioner i’ve used but it’s quite temperamental. It’s results rely heavily on what product it follows on from. The best results i’ve had was following on from the Indian herb treatment. The end result was fantastic. But this week and last i noticed the results were not as great. Following on after a shampoo seems to make it struggle a little bit to get my hair to that ‘soft’ place. It’s conditioned but not so deeply.

I found a new product line that i’m going to try it’s called Curl Harmony and it can be found here. I’m going to try the shampoo, cleansing conditioner, hydrating conditioner and the intensive mask(doesn’t it sound like i’ve become a product junkie?). I’ve promised myself (and my sister-in-law) that this will be the final products i try out. Then, if they don’t please my demanding tresses i will gravitate back to what i KNOW my hair is happy with – Herbal Essences Hello Hydration for co-washing and detangling and Jason’s 84% Aloe Vera for deep conditioning. Both have dimethicone in them but even so my hair just loves them. I will update you with my results.

Next i will be trying the onion juice natural hair loss remedy which i will post about in greater detail.

Cayenne Pepper Treatment – Week 3

This week i repeated the cayenne and neem treatment again using the hemp oil. I didn’t pre-poo with the oils overnight like i usually do. I don’t know why exactly, i guess i just couldn’t be bothered and… my hair was oily enough anyway (can you hear the excuse, lol).

This morning i made the paste again using only 1 tablespoon of oil and again applied in sections. I left it on for more than 30 mins i think as i was pre-occupied with other things but i was subconsciously monitoring how my scalp felt.

I shampooed using the Ikove Amazonian avocado and acerola shampoo. I went section by section (as i always do) taking down the twist, rinsing thoroughly making sure the water ran clean before shampooing. I did a double shampoo before applying the conditioner to rinse out as i noticed the foam was quite red. I did this by applying a good amount of shampoo to the section massaging it through until it was nice and frothy. I then squeezed off the excess shampoo and then applied more shampoo onto the section again massaging it through the hair and really making sure the scalp was clean. I squeezed off the excess and then applied a small amount of Herbal Essence Hello Hydration to the hair before rinsing. I then detangled by slopping on my Herbal Essence’s and combing through gently after which i used my Denman to get rid of any shed hairs that may have tangled up in my hair. I repeated this for all sections.

I deep conditioned using Ikove Amazonian avocado and babaçu conditioner, mixed with honey and olive oil. All in all i left this on for about 45 minutes before giving my hair a final rinse with cool water.

My hair wasn’t ‘butter soft’ like it was last week but i’m still super pleased with it. It seems the cayenne, neem and hemp oil mixed with the Indian herbs really made a good combo.

As for the growth stimulating effects of the treatment… I can’t really see any. My hair at the nape is at an awkward stage where it’s quite fluffy so it’s hard to tell whether there is any progress there. Really, i should have taken pics of my nape before and after to compare the end results. That’s a slap on the wrist for me.

Next week will be my last cayenne treatment. I might try the onion juice treatment for the next four weeks after that and document the results. I’ll defo take pics of before and after to really see whether there has been any progress. My next posts will be about the benefits of Neem and also of Onion Juice.

Take Care.
