Ikove Product Use Update

So… I used the Ikove products i mentioned in the previous blog. I compared the shampoo with the Aubrey Organics JAY shampoo i had on hand to see whether it made my hair feel any different. I alternated the shampoos from section to section (4 in all) to get a really good comparison. In all Honesty they were pretty much the same in performance so… quite unexciting. But using the ‘conditioner over shampoo’ method i’ve talked about seems to not make a blind bit of difference to the shampoo used. It replaces the oils stripped away from the shampoo and leaves it clean but soft once you rinse it off. It’s great. I’m definitely going to continue that method.

The conditioner I used was the Amazonian avocado and babaçu conditioner Nourishing for dry and very dry hair. I mixed in some honey and some olive oil (as i usually do). The conditioner is not tremendously thick, so once mixed in with honey and oil it was quite runny. Once applied i put a plastic bag on my head and left it on about two hours (i had other things to do you know!). When i rinsed it out i was so PLEASED with the results. My hair was soft! I’m so chuffed. I’ve been searching for a ‘cone’ free deep conditioner that really penetrates my hair and gives a great condition. I’ve tried several natural brands and the only one so far that my hair has taken to is JASON’s 84% Aloe Vera Conditioner. My only problem with this conditioner is that it contains dimethicone which can lead to build up on the hair. I’m very pleased with the results of this conditioner. My hair feels great without any ‘cone’ residue.

I did also use the Aubrey Organics White Camellia ultra-smoothing conditioner for dry, course hair. It wasn’t great as a DC so i thought i would use it as my detangling conditioner today. It wasn’t great at that either. What a let down. The only thing it’s good for is putting over the shampoo to prevent that stripped feeling, but i’m not going to buy it just for that purpose because any conditioner will do that job. So, i wont be buying this again.

I’m going to stick with this Ikove range for now. My hair likes it (thank goodness).

I found the actual website for Ikove UK so here it is. Still at the same great prices.

Mid-Month Cleanse

Oh Indian herbs, how i have missed thee!

I was contemplating washing my hair with either a shampoo or the Indian herb mix. In the end i opted for the Indian herbs as last month i missed it out to try shampooing again as Kimmaytube suggested. I’ve already posted the results of that in an earlier post.

I must say that my hair LOVES the herbs. I made the paste a bit too thick though and it caused it dry a bit too much on my hair and become hard so it took a while to rinse out properly. But after i rinsed it out my hair was singing and dancing to me in joyful gratitude to it’s satisfaction of being nourished and cleansed. As i co-washed out the remaining grit my curls were bouncing up and down. Detangling was gorgeous with minimal shedding and my hair felt so alive. My hair definitely responds well to alternative cleansing. Bentonite clay makes my hair feel just as good.

But unfortunately my hair highs turned into major lows as i tried out a new conditioner for my DC (deep condition) treatment. I ran out of the JASON’s conditioner and as a result i decided to order and try something new. I’ve used Aubrey Organics before and i was less than moved by it. But i decided to try a different conditioner in the range called White Camellia ultra-smoothing conditioner for dry, course hair. I added some honey and some extra virgin olive oil into the conditioner and applied it to my hair (it felt very promising). I put on a plastic cap and wrapped a towel around my head. I left it on for about an hour (i think) and then washed it out. How disappointing.  My hair didn’t feel deeply conditioned at all. It wasn’t ultra soft like i expected. It was such a let down. I was having such a good hair moment. I might as well have just slapped it in and rinsed it out. That’s how it felt. I really want to love you Aubrey Organics but my hair just doesn’t. It’s a real shame because the ingredient list is so wonderful. So natural. So straight forward. Never mind. I think i’ll stick to JASON’s from now on. I’ve learned that my hair loves you and i will continue to use you.

I also tried out a different conditioner for the co-washing process today to compare it to the Herbal Essence conditioners i normally use. The conditioner was called Nature’s Gate Organics – Chamomile & Lemon Verbena Conditioner. I used it on one half of my head and used Herbal Essences Breakage Defender on the other. I’m sorry Natures Gate but Herbal Essences (H.E) is WAY better. My hair felt instantly softer and conditioned with H.E but Nature’s Gate just seemed not to penetrate the hair shaft as well. It’s a shame (again) . The ingredients are so good. Absolutely no nasties or strange words i can’t pronounce.

Maybe my hair can grow to love them over time. But for now Herbal Essences is my go-to co-washing conditioner and JASON’s my DC conditioner. My hair just loves them.

Wash Day – All About The Hair

After focusing on my scalp last week i was looking forward to spending a bit of time on my hair this week. I was due a shampoo so got out my Aubrey Organics Desert Herb Shampoo, which is an all natural sls free shampoo. I wanted to make sure my hair was loved up and glowing by the end of the session so here is what i did:

  1. Hot Oil Treatment – I sectioned my hair into four and applied Avocado oil to each section and then twisted the section. Put on a plastic bag and left it for about an hour.
  2. Shampooed – Once only, focusing on my scalp and making sure it was clean. I always wash my hair in sections because it stops it from tangling and that’s why i start off with twisted sections right at the beginning, for this purpose.
  3. Detangled – Using a cheapie conditioner (Vo5 Silk Elixir). One section at a time applied conditioner, untwisted  and detangled, first using a wide tooth comb and then followed with a Denman Brush. Rinsed and re-twisted each section before moving on to the next.
  4. ACV Rinse – I didn’t want the cheaper conditioner coating my hair strands and reducing the effect of the deep conditioner. It’s sole purpose was to aid detangling so i wanted to make sure i got it out whilst also giving my scalp a subtle kiss and saying i haven’t forgotten about you ;-p. I used about 1/8 – 1/4 cup acv to about 1 litre water and poured over my hair, massaging my scalp for a few seconds before rinsing.
  5. Deep Conditioned – Using J/A/S/O/N’s Sea Kelp conditioner, honey and macadamia nut oil. Untwisted, applied conditioner and re-twisted. Put a plastic bag over my head and then sat under my dryer hood for about 20 mins (was way too tired to go any longer). Then i let it cool down to body temperature before rinsing.
  6. Rinsed – with cool water without taking down the twists to ensure hair stays detangled.
  7. One section at a time, untwisted, applied leave-in conditioner, Shea Pomade and hair oil to my ends and then oiled my scalp with the Shea pomade massaging it in well before cornrowing. So i end up with four cornrows ready to air dry.

One thing i did notice today was how my hair felt after shampooing. I’ve been co-washing mostly and using other cleansing methods such as the Indian herb powders so this is my first shampooing in a month. My hair felt quite squeaky and dry after shampooing which i’m not sure about. Aubrey’s is definitely a good brand to use so am not questioning that. I guess that i’m now seeing how my hair reacts to different things which is really interesting. If i had shampooed every week i’m sure i would not know how it’s really making my hair feel as that’s all i would know. Now i have deviated and tried something new i can see what effects it really has on my hair. I will definitely leave the shampooing to once a month and co-washing and cleansing with herbs the rest of the month as my hair felt good after each session. However my hair was beautifully clean after shampooing and ACV rinsing so i know my DC really penetrated deep into my hair without any obstacles. I will never shampoo without doing a DC, as I think they go hand in hand. A rinse out conditioner just won’t cut it.

My hair feels smooth, soft and well moisturised and i’m well pleased.
